A “broken heart” is more than a physical condition or a colorful analogy. We often use it in a poetic sense, and it is a source of great pain, and the pain is very real. Most of us will have such an experience in the course of our lives. A divorce, the breakup of a long friendship, the alienation of an adult son or daughter, or the rift with a trusted fellow worker are all sources of such “heartbreaks.” The ones cited have one thing in common; they are all love-related, and thus demand love-related treatment and care.

In 1997 Pope John II declared St. Thérèse of Lisieux a Doctor of the Church and she gained a place of honor among 37 great doctors of the Church that include Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Teresa of Ávila. At the young age of 21 and knowing only 50 people in her lifetime, Thérèse had an impact on the lives of literally millions, people of all faiths. She can also have an impact on our own broken relationships and offer us a very effective way of healing them emotionally and physically. All are invited to this day as a way of experiencing the Lenten Season as a time for healing of hearts. Guided by Fr. Nicholas Amato. Lunch is included.

Father Nicholas is a regular presenter of retreats and days of recollection here at Bon Secours. He is the author of three books on spirituality — all available in our bookstore and on Amazon. He serves as Staff Pastor at Church of the Nativity in Timonium, Maryland.
