DESCRIPTION:Jesus’ Ministry and Our Call to Justice \nSince the time of the Reformation\, there have been disagreements about social justice and personal piety. How do we balance the call to discipleship and personal holiness with Jesus’ strong concern for the poor and disenfranchised\, especially considering current events? \nOur discussion will focus on Jesus’ proclamation of the Reign of God in the Gospel\, with particular emphasis on the Judgement of the Nations in Matthew 25\, his Mission Statement in Luke 4\, and the implications for our living as a disciple of Jesus Christ. He is a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Columbia and lives in Ellicott City with his wife Therese Brown.

DESCRIPTION:Only One Came Back to Give Thanks – What Happened to the Other Nine? \nMartin Bell writes a “parable on a parable” about what might have happened to the nine lepers who did not return to give thanks when Jesus healed them. What are some of the reasons that we fail to give thanks in our life? As we explore the fate and/or faith of the nine\, we’ll discern what we have to be grateful for and how we too might return to offer thanks to God. Guided by Fr. Patrick Bergquist\, MDiv\, MFA\, MATW\, after nearly twenty years as a missionary priest along the Yukon River of Northern Alaska\, has turned to look into a wilderness far less charted\, but far more wondrous — that of the human heart and soul. Now a retired priest of the Missionary Diocese of Northern Alaska\, Fairbanks\, he spends his time as a spiritual and retreat director. He holds master’s degrees in Divinity\, Creative Writing\, and Theopoetics\, as well as two certificates in spiritual direction\, including the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. As a writer\, a poet\, and a priest\, he has written for publications such as Spiritual Life and America Magazine\, as well as authoring a book\, The Long Dark Winter’s Night: Reflections of a Priest in a Time of Pain and Privilege. He is currently working on a spiritual memoir called Springtime Beneath the Snows: Confessions of a Priest-Turn-Poet.

DESCRIPTION:Walk in the Light of Jesus \nAdvent is a season of waiting\, watching\, and preparing that happens in the ‘darkness of winter.’ It is a season that embraces darkness\, stillness\, and reflectiveness. We will consider various aspects of life that reflect the Scriptural themes of Advent. God’s Word invites us to open to a new discipleship\, where we can more fully see\, understand\, and walk the path of Light. \nGod’s voice is often faint or unclear because it isn’t what we expected or wanted to hear. Perhaps we have settled for a religious complacency overshadowed by comfort or conformity. \nHoliness is a challenging mission. Advent reminds us we don’t journey alone. We so often need a faith community and trusted family and friends. We need to find companions to be with us on the journey\, so we can\, as Isaiah says\, “walk in the Light of the Lord.” Guided by Sr. Sara Dwyer. \nAll are welcome to attend the Friends Day of Prayer retreats\, held monthly on the first Wednesday of the month. Sr. Sara has served in various adult faith formation positions during those years. She was a member of her congregational leadership team and served as their Justice\, Peace\, and Integrity of Creation contact for over 10 years. Sara served eight years as the Director of the Washington Retreat House in Washington\, DC. In January 2025\, she accepted a ministry role within her community\, where she continues to offer retreats and other faith formation programs. Sara holds a master’s degree in Theology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and a master’s in Education from Boston College. Sara enjoys interacting with people\, reading\, retreat ministry\, and taking nature walks.

DESCRIPTION:The Spirituality of Suffering \nOur spiritual development entails the reciprocal flow between our understanding of our religious convictions and how we practice them. This Friends Day of Prayer will examine some of the core religious convictions of our spirituality for the suffering and their caregivers. In the morning\, we will focus our attention on having a vital sense of the presence of God by thinking about how and where God is present to us. In the afternoon\, we will examine our convictions about suffering\, the cross\, death\, judgment\, and the afterlife. \nAll are welcome to attend the Friends Day of Prayer retreats\, held monthly on the first Wednesday of the month. Guided by Rev. Rich Gula. \nRev. Richard M. Gula\, P.S.S. is a retired Sulpician priest. As a Sulpician\, Rich dedicated himself to educating seminarians\, priests\, and lay pastoral ministers. After nearly four decades of teaching\, he then served for eleven years as the Director of Personnel for the Sulpician Fathers\, Province of the US. During his years of teaching\, he published widely in moral theology\, medical ethics\, and spirituality\, including The Good Life and The Call to Holiness from Paulist Press and The Way of Goodness and Holiness from Liturgical Press. His teaching and his publications were recognized as building bridges from academic theology to the practical interests of pastoral ministers and of the people in the pews. In his retirement\, he serves as hospice volunteer and grief companion for Gilchrist within the Charlestown Senior Living Community.

DESCRIPTION:Praying Lament in the Shadow of the Cross \nThis Friends Day of Prayer invites you to the courageous\, challenging\, and profoundly spiritual practice of lamenting suffering. Reflecting on the raw language of the Psalms and the Passion stories found in the Gospels of Mark and Matthew\, where even Jesus prayed Psalm 22: “My God\, my God\, why have you forsaken me\,” we will consider different ways psalmists express their suffering\, while also attempting to practice faith in the loving divine presence. After an introduction to biblical lamentation\, participants will have time in private prayer and scripture meditation to start expressing their own lament\, either through writing or choosing from other scripture passages that speak to them. The day also will include a mix of large and small group discussions for voluntary sharing. Guided by John Lafferty. \nAll are welcome to attend the Friends Day of Prayer retreats\, held monthly on the first Wednesday of the month. He is an associate member of the Catholic Biblical Association. Over the past five years\, he has delivered presentations at academic conferences as an independent scholar\, examining the Book of Job through the lens of faith recovery in the aftermath of overwhelming trauma. He began his study of the Psalms of Lamentation during his research about Job. He is retired from teaching at community colleges in Maryland and is currently doing social work with people in shelters in Baltimore.

DESCRIPTION:Searching for the Sage Within: A Contemplative Journey \nIt is said that as you age you gain more wisdom. A Sage\, as we have seen in movies or read in books\, is a person (or perhaps a character) who is an exemplary model of interior wisdom\, a teacher\, and has a connection with the Divine. \nAs we grow into our adulthood\, we begin to experience fundamental shifts that give us pause to question life’s meaning and our purpose. Each decade leads us to a place of less doing and more being. We are drawn to reflect on our self-evolution and appreciate the rhythm of changes in life. \nThis Friends Day of Prayer is an invitation to take a contemplative journey that will empower us to harness the wisdom of our lives to learn\, grow\, and deepen our humanity and meaning as we move on in years. The journey will include presentation\, small/large group conversation\, prayer\, and silent reflection. Silence will be recommended during various times of the retreat to provide us the space we need to listen deeply so we can reflect on our inner and spiritual life. In all aspects of her work\, Sharon emphasizes the importance of compassionate respect for the individual and their potential. Sharon founded Gracious-Space\, LLC (Gracious-Space.com) to fulfill her passion of guiding others to reach their full potential through her professional/life coaching and transformational conversation services. Her success is built on a simple approach: honest and respectful conversation. The transformational conversations that she guides are opportunities for small groups to share spirit-filled insights through deeper connections. DESCRIPTION:The Impact of the Eucharist in Our Lives \nRecently\, there has been a dramatic increase in the celebration of the Eucharistic presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament with processions\, periods of adoration\, and greater attendance at daily liturgies. This spiritual revival of the central aspect of the Catholic faith is remarkable and is clearly a gift from the Lord Himself. Although this retreat draws from Catholic teaching on the Eucharist\, it is open to individuals from all faith backgrounds. \nFr. James will present three reflections on the impact of the Eucharist in our lives: Jesus leads us; Jesus feeds us; Jesus heals us. It is our hope that these prayerful reflections will assist us in deepening our love for Jesus and in realizing that He is present in the Eucharist not just for our adoration\, but also to let His presence transform us so that we can bring this grace to others. He served as pastor for 18 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and as instructor\, counselor\, and administrator in high school ministry. Fr. James has also participated in programs of formation for men discerning a vocation to the religious life. After completing his 27-year ministry at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville\, MD\, Fr. James now resides as sacramental minister at St. Mark Parish\, Catonsville\, MD and is a frequent presider at liturgies at Bon Secours Retreat & Conference Center.
