SUMMARY:Friends Day of Prayer - February
DESCRIPTION:The Spirituality of Suffering \nOur spiritual development entails the reciprocal flow between our understanding of our religious convictions and how we practice them. This Friends Day of Prayer will examine some of the core religious convictions of our spirituality for the suffering and their caregivers. In the morning\, we will focus our attention on having a vital sense of the presence of God by thinking about how and where God is present to us. In the afternoon\, we will examine our convictions about suffering\, the cross\, death\, judgment\, and the afterlife. \nAll are welcome to attend the Friends Day of Prayer retreats\, held monthly on the first Wednesday of the month. It is not required to attend every month\, so register for one or more sessions as your schedule allows. While the presenters and topics vary\, each Friends Day of Prayer typically includes pastries and informal conversation at 9:30am\, a morning presentation at 10am\, an optional Mass\, a delicious lunch\, short periods of free time to enjoy the grounds or shop in the bookstore\, and an afternoon presentation. Guided by Rev. Rich Gula. \nRev. Richard M. Gula\, P.S.S. is a retired Sulpician priest. As a Sulpician\, Rich dedicated himself to educating seminarians\, priests\, and lay pastoral ministers. After nearly four decades of teaching\, he then served for eleven years as the Director of Personnel for the Sulpician Fathers\, Province of the US. During his years of teaching\, he published widely in moral theology\, medical ethics\, and spirituality\, including The Good Life and The Call to Holiness from Paulist Press and The Way of Goodness and Holiness from Liturgical Press. His teaching and his publications were recognized as building bridges from academic theology to the practical interests of pastoral ministers and of the people in the pews. In his retirement\, he serves as hospice volunteer and grief companion for Gilchrist within the Charlestown Senior Living Community.

SUMMARY:REMEMBER: The Sacred Art of Rest
DESCRIPTION:REMEMBER: The Sacred Art of Rest is an immersive wellness experience designed to help you slow down\, reconnect with yourself\, and explore rest as a sacred practice. Through reflective learning\, guided conversation\, lectio divina\, mindfulness\, meditation\, journaling\, music\, and an immersive sound bath\, we will create space to explore the stories we carry about work\, worth\, productivity\, resilience\, and rest. Together\, we will listen. We will reflect. We will release. We will receive. And we will honor the wisdom of those who came before us while making space for a different way of being. This isn’t a retreat where you come to become a better version of yourself. You are not a project to be fixed. You are invited to simply come home. \nLEARN: Explore the relationship between rest\, resilience\, identity\, culture\, and wellness. LISTEN: Create intentional space for stories\, wisdom\, music\, and reflection. REFLECT: Use guided journaling and contemplative practices to examine what you’ve been carrying. RECLAIM: Consider what rest\, joy\, softness\, and receiving look like in your life now. RECEIVE: Allow meditation\, music\, vibration\, and sound to support deep relaxation. REST: End the experience in an immersive sound bath designed to quiet the noise and invite your body into stillness. REMEMBER: You have spent enough time carrying. Come put something down. Come remember the parts of yourself that became quiet while you were surviving\, working\, caregiving\, achieving\, and showing up for everyone else. Come remember that rest belongs to you\, too. Come rest. Come restore. Come remember. Lunch is included. Guided by Teara Booker. \nTeara Booker\, MPH\, CD\, E-RYT 300 is a seasoned wellness practitioner and maternal health expert with over 20 years of experience in public and maternal health. She holds degrees in health\, dispute resolution\, and behavioral management and is extensively trained and certified in a variety of movement and restorative practices. Teara has dedicated her career to supporting individuals and communities through education\, empowerment\, and holistic wellness\, blending her deep understanding of health with evidence-based practices and intuitive guidance. A passionate interdisciplinary educator\, Teara is trained in Ashtanga\, Yin\, Vinyasa\, Restorative Yoga\, and Yoga Nidra\, creating workshops that cultivate mindfulness\, healing\, and self-awareness. Her approach integrates movement\, meditation\, and somatic practices to help participants connect with their bodies\, release tension\, and nurture overall well-being. Through her workshops\, Teara inspires individuals to embrace balance\, cultivate resilience\, and harness their inner strength for lasting wellness.

SUMMARY:Quiet Mornings - In Person Session
DESCRIPTION:Quiet Mornings sessions are currently being held IN-PERSON on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. \n(It is also held virtually on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. Every virtual session is held from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon.)\nPlease email Joanne at jmcahooneph3@gmail.com for the Zoom sessions invitation for Virtual sessions. \nQuiet mornings provide an opportunity for quiet – for reflection\, prayer\, listening\, presence – in common with others. Perhaps you’d like to carve out time\, but could use the support of a structure that is also flexible? Most of us could! And there is encouragement and strength in coming together in this way. You are welcome whenever matches your schedule/desire/need. \nEach gathering is bracketed by an opening and closing prayer. The quiet hour at its heart is not scripted or guided. Each one enters the quiet and utilizes or follows it as she/he desires to do so. Some opt to journal\, read\, walk; to engage in meditation; imaginative prayer or centering prayer; art or collage; or physical movement. The commitment to enter the quiet with some regularity as an ongoing practice is the point. By doing so in companionship with others\, we support each other’s journey just by willingly being present in God’s presence together\, and hoping good for each other. In our closing prayer\, we pray a blessing for each other. Please feel welcome! Guided by Joanne Cahoon. \nJoanne Cahoon\, D.Min. – spiritual director\, retreat leader\, coach – facilitates the Quiet Mornings.

SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday Day of Prayer
DESCRIPTION:“Rend your heart not your garments\, and return to the Lord\, your God.” (Joel 2:13) \nThese words from the prophet Joel invite us to take an inward journey during the 40 days of Lent to search our hearts as to where we stand with God and our neighbor and to enter more deeply into the Mystery of God’s love. \nJoin us for a quiet day of prayer as we begin the sacred Lenten season. The atmosphere for the day will be reverent silence\, which allows us to more deeply encounter God and be attuned to God’s promptings. It will begin with reflective input by Sr. Bernie\, followed by time for private prayer and reflection\, lunch in silence\, the option of walking the labyrinth or beautiful grounds\, journaling\, or just relaxing with God. There will be an opportunity to attend Ash Wednesday liturgy with distribution of ashes\, if you wish. The day will conclude with participants coming together to name the blessings of the day and to join in a closing prayer. This is a day of silence. Lunch is included. Guided by Sr. Bernadette Claps\, CBS. \nSister Bernadette Claps\, a Sister of Bon Secours\, provides spiritual direction and spiritual companionship at the Retreat and Conference Center at Bon Secours. She holds graduate certificates in Spiritual Direction\, Spirituality and Aging. She has done graduate studies in theology and received a Master of Social Work from New York University.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lenten Mini-Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“Lent is a time for us to empty ourselves of worldly distractions and allow God to fill us with His love\, His grace\, and His peace.” ~St. (Mother) Teresa of Calcutta \nThe Lenten Season is a fertile time to journey with Jesus in a meaningful way and to employ our prayerful imagination as we encounter him\, his life\, and his ministry in the Gospels. It is a time of connecting intimately with Jesus while pursuing opportunities that help to nourish and renew our relationship with him and ourselves. As spiritual seekers\, we can engage with the person of Jesus as way-maker and healer and discover (or rediscover) the Holy One’s healing love for each of us in the good news he revealed and embodied within his teachings. \nAs Lent begins its perennial unfolding this February\, you are invited to gather virtually to mark this sacred period of deepening faith\, wrestling questions\, and responding to the Holy One’s call within our lives. In community\, we will engage in contemplative practices with Sacred Scripture\, such as lectio divina (with some contemporary nuances)\, while also personally reflecting upon what our respective intentions for this annual journey might behold. Dedicated time for creatively expressing these intentions will take shape through writing prompts\, group discussion\, and moments of prayer. We will also consider ancient and non-traditional Lenten practices that might enhance our journey this year. Recorded music will also be included in celebration of this time together. \nHowever you observe this transformative season\, we hope you will join us and participate in this online program. Wherever you find yourself as Lent commences\, this opportunity for beginning anew — together in solidarity and deep presence — awaits you. \nThis is a virtual program. When registering for this virtual program\, please provide the email address to which we should send the Zoom Meeting link. If you don’t receive the Zoom Meeting information by the day before the session\, please contact the Welcome Center at 410-442-3120. Guided by Gordon Creamer. \nGordon Creamer\, MA\, creator of the Mission Bridge\, currently serves as Program Director at Well for the Journey\, a spiritual wellness center in Lutherville\, MD. As a creative and contemplative builder\, he has held leadership roles in healthcare programming and operations since 2001 at various assisted living\, skilled nursing\, and hospice communities. He earned a Master of Arts in Spiritual & Pastoral Care from Loyola University and a Master of Arts in Theology from the Ecumenical Institute of St. Mary’s Seminary & University. Currently\, he is a candidate for the Doctor of Ministry Program at the Ecumenical Institute. Gordon has facilitated numerous retreats and workshops that focus on creating opportunities for participants to explore and enhance their spirituality and well-being through various media and formats. He also participates as a peer group leader in the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation’s Transforming Community Program. His passions include uplifting the journey of adults\, individuals with memory impairment\, and members of the LGBTQ+ community\, as well as fostering support groups and programs for caregivers and those who are grieving losses. Trained as a spiritual director/companion\, end-of-life doula\, and Reiki practitioner\, Gordon welcomes all in discovering the spiritual life as a means of healing\, expanding\, and flourishing. SUMMARY:In the Belly of Winter - A Silent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Listening for New Life with St. Brigid \nIn the quiet heart of winter\, life is already stirring beneath the surface. Though the landscape appears dormant\, the earth is preparing for spring\, holding new life in unseen and sacred ways. This silent retreat invites us to enter that same sacred rhythm — to rest\, to listen\, and to notice what is quietly awakening within our own souls. The Irish celebration of Imbolc\, celebrated on February 1st each year\, marks the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox. The word Imbolc means “in the belly” and is a festival that honors the Celtic goddess\, Brigid\, along with the arrival of spring and newborn lambs. February 1st is also the feast day of St. Brigid\, the beloved female patron saint of Ireland. Over the centuries\, the stories\, myths\, and legends of the ancient Celtic Brigid and St. Brigid have become beautifully intertwined\, offering enduring images of wisdom\, hospitality\, healing\, creativity\, and hope for us today. Mid-February at Bon Secours is far more likely to feel like winter than spring! Yet if we look closely\, we notice the days are getting longer\, the sun seems brighter\, and a few enthusiastic green stems are poking up in warm places. During this silent retreat weekend\, we will listen with Brigid to the new life gestating within us and yearning to come forth with Spring energy from the depths of our souls. We will gather Friday evening for a time of welcome and introduction of Brigid before entering into silence for the remainder of the weekend. Brief reflections will be offered on Saturday morning and evening\, with an optional time of tea and gentle music on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday morning\, we will break silence together\, sharing from our experience and gathering the graces of the weekend before returning home. Come rest in the spacious embrace of winter and listen for the wisdom stirring within you. Guided by Lorie Conway. Meals and lodging included. \nCheck-in begins at 4pm. There will be a brief welcome session at 5:30pm\, followed by dinner at 6pm. The retreat begins after dinner at 7pm on Friday and concludes after lunch at 1pm on Sunday. Mass will be available Sunday morning for those who wish to attend. \nLorie Conway\, MA\, Spiritual Companion has a passion for deep listening and accompanying others on their spiritual journeys through spiritual companionship\, contemplative small groups\, and spiritual retreats. Lorie received her certificate in spiritual direction from the Kairos School of Spiritual Formation and holds a master’s degree in Religion from Lancaster Theological Seminary and a master’s degree in Behavioral Management & Human Resources from Johns Hopkins University. Lorie is on the programming staff at Well for the Journey and is the director of the Transforming Community: Leading Contemplative Spiritual Groups & Retreats program at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation. Lorie’s spirituality is rooted in the Christ tradition and is welcoming of the many paths and unique journeys enfolded within Divine Mystery.

SUMMARY:Lean In Towards the Light - A Lenten Invitation
DESCRIPTION:This retreat meets participants a couple of weeks into the Lenten journey\, as we carry hopes for what God might be shaping within us: in our relationship with God and with others\, in the ways our faith is expressed through action\, and in how our lives might have a meaningful impact on our communities and the wider world. We may not know exactly how this will happen\, but we believe that it can\, and we want to collaborate with God in bringing it about. In the midst of February — with slight hints of spring and life about to burst forth from death — we will listen and reflect on the choices and invitations God puts before us and work with him to be more available to what this Lent might do in us\, and then through us. Lunch is included. Guided by Joanne Cahoon. \nJoanne Cahoon\, D.Min. holds a bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies\, master’s degree in Religion/Pastoral Ministry\, graduate certificates in spiritual direction and in spirituality studies\, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago\, where her specialization was spirituality and practical theology. Along the way\, Joanne has taught in elementary\, secondary\, undergraduate\, and graduate school settings. She has also served as youth minister\, high school campus minister\, consultant\, writer\, national trainer\, diocesan staff member\, staff member of a graduate school\, spiritual director\, facilitator of retreats\, and professional coach. Joanne has welcomed and worked with many individuals and groups\, serving them as they listen for God’s invitations in their personal and corporate lives. She finds it a privilege to be involved in spiritual and human formation — bringing deep listening\, presence\, creativity\, and a commitment to her own ongoing formation to her work.

SUMMARY:Honoring Life's Do-Overs
DESCRIPTION:We are living in a time of resets. This election season\, many feel America is in need of a restart\, just as enslaved women and women throughout history have yearned for a fresh start they were never afforded. What would a do-over look like in your life if given the grace and time to dream of one? This year\, we will explore the possibilities of starting anew — privately and collectively — through meditation\, reflection\, creation\, and manifestation. Each participant will have the space to create anew in their own artistic way. This is not a session of regrets\, but a journey of adventure\, discovery\, lament\, and laughter. Get ready to dream and take flight! Lunch is included. Guided by Dr. Renee K. Harrison. \nRenee K. Harrison\, a Professor of African American and US Religious History at Howard University\, earned her PhD in Religion from Emory University with an interdisciplinary focus on History\, Philosophy\, African American Studies\, and Black Feminist/Womanist Thought. Her recent book\, Black Hands\, White House: Slave Labor and the Making of America\, documents and appraises the role enslaved women\, men\, and children played in building the United States\, especially the nation’s capital. She is currently working on a project about Native Americans’ contributions\, tentatively titled Smudging Our Way Through Broken Treaties: Native American Spirituality and American Genocide. Dr. Harrison is also the author of Enslaved Women and the Art of Resistance in Antebellum America and co-author of Engaged Teaching in Theology and Religion with Dr. Jennie Knight (UVA). She is known for her creative works\, speaking engagements\, teaching\, healing workshops\, and rituals. A native of Los Angeles\, CA\, Dr. Harrison is a retired 11-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department and the former executive director of A Leap of Faith Productions\, a non-profit community-based theater group in Los Angeles. She is also an artist\, poet\, and playwright.
