Rose Kurtz, our Guest Services Manager at the Retreat & Conference Center, offers today’s reflection based on a recent book that she read. She misses all of the staff at the Center and looks forward to when we can open our doors to guests once again. Let’s spend a little quiet time reading Rose’s reflection.
“Tuesdays with Morrie”
During the Pandemic I have been reading many books and one that stood out to me was “Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. It is based on a true story of a young man, the author Mitch, who spends 14 Tuesdays with his college professor, Morrie, who is dying of ALS. Their relationship turned into one final “class” lesson on how to live.
Here are some insights from the book. They are all quotes from Morrie.
- Accept what you are able to do and what you are not able to do.
- Accept the past as past, without denying it or discarding it.
- Learn to forgive yourself and to forgive others.
- Don’t assume that it’s too late to get involved.
- Devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.
- As long as we can love each other and remember the feeling of love we had, we can die without ever really going away. All the love you created is still there. All the memories are still there. You live on – in the hearts of everyone you have touched and nurtured while you were here.
- Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.
- Death ends a life, not a relationship.
- The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love and to let it come in.
Reading this book gave me many things to think about. If you’re looking for a new book during the pandemic, I highly recommend “Tuesdays with Morrie”. Peace be with you.
