Feast of St. Augustine of Hippo

Aug 28, 2022

Today is the Feast of St. Augustine of Hippo. “Augustine is recognized as a saint in the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion. He is also a preeminent Catholic Doctor of the Church and the patron of the Augustinians. His memorial is celebrated on 28 August, the day of his death. Augustine is the patron saint of brewers, printers, theologians, and a number of cities and dioceses” (Catholic.org). There are so many examples to take from the life of St. Augustine, whose former lifestyle of vices and habits provide a practical example of how one can convert and use the Spirit to turn their life around for God’s glory. Let’s meditate on a few of quotes of wisdom from St. Augustine today.

“There is no saint without a past, no sinner without a future.”St. Augustine

“Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.”

“To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek him the greatest adventure; to find him, the greatest human achievement.”

“Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are Anger and Courage. Anger at the way things are, and Courage to see that they do not remain as they are.”

“People travel to wonder
at the height of the mountains,
at the huge waves of the seas,
at the long course of the rivers,
at the vast compass of the ocean,
at the circular motion of the stars,
and yet they pass by themselves
without wondering. ”

“God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but He has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.”

“God provides the wind, Man must raise the sail. ”
