Soul Gardening

By Julia Morris-Myers

We have had a particularly cold spring here in Maine, and even as I write this in mid-April the leaves on the trees are nowhere to be found, the garden is still asleep, and our many flower beds have nary a crocus trying to bloom. And yes, it reminds me of my soul at times. Feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and grief can overwhelm us all, and we yearn for that seed of love and encouragement to keep us going.

Just a few days ago I bought packets of vegetable seeds for our garden this year, and that small act filled me with encouragement and a desire to get outside to prepare the soil and pull weeds.  Have you ever thought that perhaps all we do for our gardens can also be done for our souls? Preparing, cleaning out, choosing seeds, planting, feeding, watering…the list goes on and on.

I invite you to join me at Bon Secours for the weekend of May 30-June 1 to do some Soul Gardening. We’ll prepare a place for Love, choose seeds to plant (kindness, joy, action), and gather tools to ensure a good harvest. There will be periods of conversation, generous amounts of silence, and discernment for what we each want to cultivate in our hearts. Scripture, poetry, nature, and music will be our guides. I hope you will journey with me.
