St. Thérèse of Lisieux: The Little Way of Love

Sep 28, 2025

Feast Day: October 1

Each October 1, the Church celebrates the life and witness of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, also known as “The Little Flower.” Though she died at only 24 years old, her spiritual wisdom has touched millions across the world. She is a Doctor of the Church, patroness of the missions, and a beloved guide for all who seek God in the ordinary rhythms of life.

What makes St. Thérèse so enduringly relatable is her “Little Way.” She believed holiness was not found in great accomplishments, but in doing small things with great love. For her, even the most ordinary tasks—folding laundry, offering a smile, being patient in difficult moments—could become acts of devotion when offered to God.

Thérèse once wrote: “My vocation is love!” This conviction shaped her life. Her hidden, humble way of love reminds us that sanctity is not reserved for the few but is possible for all. Whether in family life, in service to others, or in moments of quiet prayer, we are invited to follow her Little Way by trusting God and loving deeply in simple, daily acts.

At the Bon Secours Retreat & Conference Center, we often hear retreatants speak of their longing to draw closer to God in practical, everyday ways. St. Thérèse is a companion for that journey—teaching us to find God’s presence not only in the extraordinary, but in the gentle and hidden corners of our lives.

As we honor her feast day, may we ask St. Thérèse to intercede for us: that we might walk her Little Way of love, trusting that no act of kindness is too small in the eyes of God.

“Without love, deeds, even the most brilliant, count as nothing.” – St. Thérèse of Lisieux
