Last weekend, it finally wasn’t raining, and the weather was bearable enough to go out and clean up my garden, getting it ready for a few months of fallow time both for the soil and for me. It looked kind of sad and barren as I finished up. But then, just along the edge of the raised bed, I saw one little yellow daisy reaching straight up. It was perfect as ever, as if to say, “Wait a minute! I am still here, and we’ll all be back again in spring.”
Similar to our “waiting” in the season of Advent — while knowing that God is already with us — the daisy seeds are in the soil, preparing to return in the spring. I’m reminded that we can experience God’s presence in surprising moments when we take time to stop and be still, especially in all the business of this time of year…or maybe in those barren moments in our lives. Seeing that daisy was a holy moment — an unexpected connection with my winter garden, the seasons of my life, and with our Creator.
