Epiphany: God’s love came down

Jan 5, 2022

Tomorrow we celebrate Epiphany, the day we commemorate the Magi visiting the infant Jesus. If you are seeking a way to celebrate this special day, why not register for our online Epiphany retreat? This retreat will be guided by Gordon Creamer, tomorrow evening from 6-8pm. Click here to learn more. For now, let’s take a few quiet moments to contemplate the meaning of this encounter so long ago.

Today the Magi gaze in deep wonder at what they see: heaven on earth, earth in heaven, man in God, Godadvent, magi in man, one whom the whole universe cannot contain now enclosed in a tiny body.

As they look, they believe and do not question, as their symbolic gifts bear witness: incense for God, gold for a king, myrrh for one who is to die.

~Peter Chrysologus

The mysterious men from the Orient followed the star and discovered the place where the secret of love lay in the helplessness of a human baby, wrapped in swaddling clothes in the feeding trough of an animal.

They discovered the place where God’s love came down. That is the most important thing for all people, to discover individually, in their own time and at their own hour, the place where Divine love has broken through, and then to follow the star that has risen for them and to remain true to the light that has fallen into their hearts.
